Picture researchers have been telling us how they miss the benefits of
searching files and rummaging through the stacks themselves "for that undiscovered pictorial
gem, which is what the fun used to be about." (Diana Korchien, Editor, Montage).
So to help them and all of our agents and customers, we are digitising
our news pictures
and captions for 1960 day by day. This monumental task will take many many hours of work to complete but we are already several months through 1960 and we aim to work faster than the newsrooms of the 1960s to stay ahead of the 50 year anniversaries.

This new standard of digitisation reflects our commitment to the ongoing conservation
of decaying negatives and preservation of the complete image, uncropped and just
as it was the day it was taken. They are in the raw but can be cleaned on request and you see the original images and
captions, with no watermarks when you log in.
To search exclusively in 50 years ago click on the IPU archive button after login. Corresponding negative bags will appear alongside the pictures or search for the filename plus t on the end to locate e.g. IPU387924 for the picture and IPU387924t for negative bag. Some of the caption information can be cut off as it wraps around the negative bag so if you need details please let us know. Another good tip is that the date shown is the file date, we have already found some wonderful anniversary material from WW2 slipped into the daily feed as well as delayed pictures from news stories which are often better than the initial breaking photos.
Our home page www.topfoto.co.uk has a link to see the whole day's production, just as the busy news editor did fifty years ago but if you want to work ahead for story leads you can just search with a specific date or month in 1960,
for example March 1960. We add more from the original daily
files of
TopFoto's News archive all the time so keep checking for updates.
