Sherriffs at the Cinema: a new specialist collection at TopFoto
TopFoto - the imagery of nearly everything

Scottish artist Robert Sherriffs was one of the great twentieth-century caricaturists.
From 1948, as film cartoonist for Punch, he captured all of the screen icons in Hollywood's golden
era, from Marlon Brando to Marlene Dietrich, Audrey Hepburn to Orson Welles
until his death from cancer in 1960, at the age of 54.

His work for Punch was aided by stills or by brief visits to previews.  He very seldom saw a complete
film but would manage, in sketch after sketch to capture the theme or vision as well as the star.

Caricaturists are by nature individualists.  A deeply private man, he lived away
from Londonwhich suited his temperament and his work, although an increasing aversion
to deadlines meant that his wife was constantly to be found on the last available train to town,
having snatched the copy from his desk.  Aware of his lack of punctuality, the Radio Times,
who were widely using him, offered him a studio on site.  The offer was
withdrawn after a week due to the total absence of its occupant.

TopFoto is delighted to be able to offer you a very different angle on the
cinematic world, courtesy of Robert Stewart Sherriffs and Punch.
