1904<br>The waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans was opened on 7th January 1914, afer many crude attempts, a stream of broken treaties and the deaths of many men.  The canal is considered one of the engineering wonders of the world.  This photo shows what Panama's Big Ditch looked like in December 1904 during excavation of Gaillard Cut.

A plan has been advanced for a completely new sea-level canal which would almost eliminate leaks.  The cost of the deep excavation is estimated to be 5 billion dollars and the work may take ten years.

1887 - Gustave Eiffel became involved in the Panama Canal<br><br>Half-length portrait of the famous French engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel.  In 1887 (this picture was taken some time between 1885-1895), Eiffel was brought into design locks for de Lesseps' doomed effort to build the Panama Canal.
