Harvest from the Holinshed Chronicles

1133572

This picture illustrates the plight of Germany as she squares up to the coming Battle of the Second Winter. Scores of Berliners mostly women dig up potatoes daily in the enormous allotment formed by the one time lovely Tiergarten. Most of the potatoes they gather go into the city's store piles for the benefit of everybody, but one day a week they can take home for themselves as many as they can carry. This photograph was taken on such a day. The ruins of Hitler's Reichstag make a telling background to the scene a sombre reminder of the reason for the fight against starvation October 1946

August - The fields are all alive with sultry noise Of labor's sounds, and insects' busy joys; The reapers o'er their glittering sickles stoop, Starting full oft the partridge coveys up; Some o'er the rustling scythe go bending on; And shockers follow where their toils have gone, Heaping the swaths that rustle in the sun - Clare's Shepherd's Calendar<br>©TopFoto

Park Ranger Mr Stanley Blazevics, 58, displays onions on his allotment near his home in Wyke near Bradford which he claims were ready-cooked when plucked from the soil. With a thermometer, he found an eight foot square hot spot with temperatures over 110 degrees F, in which his onions were coooking as efficiently as if in a pan on the stove... and they taste the same, he claimed. Two phenomena have caused a mystery to his local gardening circles and a scientist from Bradford University was called in to investigate. His theory that the heat may have been created by compost has met with a lukewarm reception from Mr =Blazevics, because he treats the whole garden in the same way. After harveting, he plans a deep dig for the cause of the intense heat. - 5th October 1982 - © TopFoto / PA
