Gallery Package - Harvest
This picture illustrates the plight of Germany as she squares up to the coming Battle of the Second Winter. Scores of Berliners mostly women dig up potatoes daily in the enormous allotment formed by the one time lovely Tiergarten. Most of the potatoes they gather go into the city's store piles for the benefit of everybody, but one day a week they can take home for themselves as many as they can carry. This photograph was taken on such a day. The ruins of Hitler's Reichstag make a telling background to the scene a sombre reminder of the reason for the fight against starvation October 1946
