A procession of Mini's and Mini Cooper's, that numbered almost 100, set off for Bologna in Italy from Lydden racing circuit in Kent. Their aim to raise cash for children's charities. In the ten years since the annual event started they have raised over 1 million pounds. * Masterminded by &quotItalian Job" film fan and committed Mini nut Freddy St George, the event which has grown enormously since it was started with a handful of Minis, now contains teams from New Zealand, Canada, The USA, Japan as well as all corners of the UK and most of Europe. 5/1/04: Britain leads the world in design, according to the young innovators of the future. Design students from across the country were asked to nominate the best and worst of world design, and more than three in four (76%) believed Britain has the best product design skills, ahead of Scandinavia (64%) and the Far East (43%). Individual products also came in for praise, as they voted Dyson's dual cyclone vacuum cleaner the best design ever, and the 1960's classic Mini Cooper car as an icon of the twentieth century.

1959 Austin Mini Seven. In 1957 BMC commissioned Alec Issigonis to design a new small car, following his success with the Morris Minor. Popularly known as the Mini, this innovative model popularised many design features still common today. Driving the front wheels, its transverse mounted engine, with the gearbox beneath, removed the space-consuming transmission tunnel. Styling was minimalist, in sharp contrast to the transatlantic fins and chrome of the fifties. 1959 Austin Mini Seven.
Credit: National Motor Museum / HIP / TopFoto

1960 Austin Mini Van. Designed in the wake of the Suez oil crisis, the Mini's ingenious design made it ideal for light commercial work. Good acceleration and sharp handling made it fun to drive. When new, BMC marketed the Mini van as the Austin 7 quarter tonner. Also available in pick-up form, its wheelbase was longer than the saloon. This van had only one previous owner before coming to the National Motor Museum in 1986. Its optional extras include the passenger seat at £12, and the bumper over-riders. 1960 Austin Mini Van.
Credit: National Motor Museum / HIP / TopFoto
