Lake Baikal, Russia: Situated in south-east Siberia, the 3.15-million-ha Lake Baikal is the oldest (25 million years) and deepest (1,700 m) lake in the world. It contains 20% of the world's total unfrozen freshwater reserve. Known as the 'Galapagos of Russia', its age and isolation have produced one of the world's richest and most unusual freshwater faunas, which is of exceptional value to evolutionary science. Aral Sea

March 22, 2001 is the International Day of Water Resources, marked since the UN Conference on Environment and Development proclaimed it at a 1992 session in Rio de Janeiro. Neither technological progress nor exploration of artesian strata and invention of mighty desalinating devices could diminish the value of pure water, which remains the planet's No. 1 treasure to this day. Scientists predict that in 25 years' time, 8 billion people may risk becoming victims of a water crisis unless we learn to care for every drop of water we spend. The floor of the Aral Sea has become a lifeless desert.

Lake Baikal

March 22, 2001 is the International Day of Water Resources, marked since the UN Conference on Environment and Development proclaimed it at a 1992 session in Rio de Janeiro. According to the information of the World Health Organisation, more than 1 billion people are forced to drink contaminated water every day, while 2.4 billion, or 40% of the world population, have to do without water-purifying services. Every year, diseases resulting from poor quality of drinking water bring about the death of 3.4 million people, children mostly. Irkutsk Region, Russia. Russian scientist Georgy Ushakov (1901-1963). His most essential contribution to the development of world geography was an unprecedented expedition to the Severnaya Zemlya [Northern Land] Archipelago. This expedition, organised and headed by Ushakov in 1930-1932, consolidated Russia's prestige as the pioneer in exploring, mapping and investigating the world's last and largest land sector of 37,000 square metres to have been discovered in the 20th century. G. Ushakov collected priceless scientific materials on the nature and economic potential of islands of the Arctic Ocean, the ethnography of the Eskimos and Chukchis he had brought from the Chukot Peninsula and the navigation in these districts. During long expeditions Ushakov took pictures of the environment. Pictured: limestone rocks stuck out of the sea. From RIA Novosti collection. Zh69 - 1561.
ÿØÿà
