March 22, 2001 is the International Day of Water Resources, marked since the UN Conference on Environment and Development proclaimed it at a 1992 session in Rio de Janeiro. Neither technological progress nor exploration of artesian strata and invention of mighty desalinating devices could diminish the value of pure water, which remains the planet's No. 1 treasure to this day. Scientists predict that in 25 years' time, 8 billion people may risk becoming victims of a water crisis unless we learn to care for every drop of water we spend. The floor of the Aral Sea has become a lifeless desert.
