0149099 - Russian scientist Georgy Ushakov (1901-1963). His most essential contribution to the development of world geography was an unprecedented expedition to the Severnaya Zemlya [Northern Land] Archipelago. This expedition, organised and headed by Ushakov in 1930-1932, consolidated Russia's prestige as the pioneer in exploring, mapping and investigating the world's last and largest land sector of 37,000 square metres to have been discovered in the 20th century. G. Ushakov collected priceless scientific materials on the nature and economic potential of islands of the Arctic Ocean, the ethnography of the Eskimos and Chukchis he had brought from the Chukot Peninsula and the navigation in these districts. During long expeditions Ushakov took pictures of the environment. Pictured: limestone rocks stuck out of the sea. From RIA Novosti collection. Zh69 - 1561. ÿØÿà
